Facebook used its F8 Developer Conference to reveal new features using developments in augmented reality (AR), chatbot and virtual reality (VR) technology. Here are a few highlights:
Camera Effects Platform
This new feature comprises AR selfie masks similar to the filter functions on apps like Snapchat. But Facebook’s version is unique because it enables users to create their own filters by uploading images with credits on Frame Studio. Soon developers will also be adding branded filters and other effects, such as bubbles with related information appearing when the camera recognises specific objects. Learn more
Chatbots in Messenger
Messenger now allows users to introduce a chatbot into conversations. The bot keeps users informed in real time about news and can collaborate on tasks like creating schedules, sharing locations and ordering services. Learn more
VR Experiences
Facebook also announced React VR, which lets developers build virtual reality experiences with the help of JavaScript framework. Also launched was Facebook Spaces in beta for Oculus Rift, and Touch, a new app that lets users interact in a VR environment. Learn more
